SMP stands for Scalp Micro Pigmentation and it is a non-surgical treatment for hair loss. It is a new technique which consists in tattooing tiny dots on the scalp with a specialized device, needle and pigments, to create the appearance of hair follicles.
SMP treatments are usually completed within 3 sessions to achieve the expected result. Sessions should be at least 1 week apart to let your skin heal and the pigments settle so 3 sessions can be completed in 2 weeks. We recommend the first 2 sessions to be done within 2 weeks and the 3rd one can be done 1 week to 1 month after. Here is an example for a hair loss at stage 6 on the Norwood scale:
The first session typically lasts 4 hours. It includes the optional application of a topical anesthetic which takes 30 minutes to take effect.
The second session takes between 3h and 3h30min. We recommended to have it done 1 week after the initial procedure. Density is added and the color is adjusted using 2 to 3 different pigment shades to match your natural hair and the hairline is refined.
The last session can take place 1 week to 1 month after the second session to perfect the color and the hairline. The last session usually takes 2 to 3 hours.
Scalp pigments differ from permanent make-up pigments and tattoo inks as they are specifically made for scalp:
The machine used for SMP resembles the traditional tattoo machine except that its design has been based on the requirements of SMP. The machine we are using is one of the best that can be found in the SMP industry. It is well-balanced in terms of weight, very stable, quiet, allowing us to implant the pigment with accuracy and consistency even afer long hours of work.
The result of a scalp micropigmentation (SMP) treatment usually lasts more than 5 years and slightly fade without discoloration over time. Fading can be reduced by limiting exposure to sun UV rays and keeping the scalp clean and moisturized. Once the SMP results begin to fade, touch-ups are recommended to maintain the desired look.
Most of our clients assess the level of pain as very mild and easily bearable. If you cannot stand the pain, a topical anesthetic can be applied on your scalp before and during procedure although we prefer not using it to avoid potential undesirable skin reactions. During and after the treatment, your scalp will feel hot for a few hours.
We don’t create microblading hair strokes on the scalp as the skin on the scalp is oiler than the face skin so it has a high chance of color migration. Moreover, strokes may get bigger and fade after 6 months. Creating hair strokes on the scalp can also lead to a longer healing process and bad results if the needle is too deep. Besides, if you suddenly have alopecia or lose a lot of hair, hair strokes on your scalp would appear odd compared to the rest. The finish is much nicer and more natural if tiny dots are created to replicate hair follicles. Thousands of impressions are created all over the scalp to create a darker appearance, fuller and thicker hair.
SMP is a very efficient method to conceal any type of scar on your head. The technique differs from the regular SMP treatment as it requires more attention and work to hide the scar by blending several pigment colors to perfectly match your natural hair.
Women can also have SMP to boost their confidence back. Women facing hair loss and thinning hair can have SMP to give the illusion of fuller and thicker hair. SMP is a painless, long-lasting, and affordable procedure.
